How Will I Feel During iRest? You will probably feel like you are in a place between asleep and awake where you hear the sound of the guide’s voice, but don’t necessarily comprehend everything that is being said.
What If I Fall Asleep? No problem! If you do drift off to sleep, try to tune into the sound of the guide’s voice to bring yourself back into a semi-awake state. If you do happen to fall asleep, don’t worry, iRest still works. Practice and see for yourself. If you start snoring, we may gently touch you on the shoulder or ankle to gently bring you back into the practice. If you know that you snore, you may want to prop your head up or rest on your side.
What If I Can’t Relax? It’s okay. Just welcome and be with what is. iRest teaches you that the very things that are keeping you from relaxing deeply are always trying to make themselves known. Instead of ‘pushing’ them away or out of your mind, welcome them in as a part of your experience. Instead of “Willing yourself to relax,” be “Willing to relax.” Welcome each state of mind, just as it is. The moment you try to change something, disturbances begin to grow in the mind. Welcome and accept yourself and your surroundings, just as they are. Remember, “That which you are willing to be with, you are set free from.”
What If I Start To Have A Flashback Or Experience Intense Negative Emotions? Emotions are a natural part of the practice. It’s completely normal for people to experience emotions or flashbacks, even intense ones, during iRest, just as you might during normal life. It is equally normal to not want to experience these emotions. iRest teaches you how to maintain peace of mind even when these experiences arise. You’ll be reminded throughout each session to return to your Inner Resource if you begin to feel uncomfortable, upset, or anxious. During iRest, when you return to your Inner Resource, allow the sound of your guide’s voice to continue on in the background. When you feel comfortable, return again to listening to your guide’s voice and following the iRest instructions. iRest teaches you how to trust yourself, with the help of your Inner Resource, and to know how to manage your own experience.
Why Do You Guide Us Through Experiencing Negative Emotions? During iRest, you are learning to stay peaceful or return to a peaceful state of mind when emotions arise. It is important to remember that iRest is a safe space in which you are ‘practicing’ feeling emotions. When you observe emotions during iRest, you are learning to take a step back from the emotions in order to observe them from a state of pure awareness, instead of letting the emotions consume you as they sometimes do in regular life. You are also learning how to use ‘opposite’ emotions as a way to remind yourself that emotions are constantly changing, and that although a negative emotion may be present, a positive emotion can also be present at the same time. This process helps create a new pattern in your brain so that next time a negative emotion arises, your brain will remember that positive emotions can be present at the same time as the negative emotion. This helps temper your experience.
Why Is It Important To Practice Everyday? Developing a daily practice teaches your mind how to step back from life and just “welcome” and “be with what is.” When you cultivate a regular practice of iRest, your mind begins to realize that it is going to have this time to process emotions and beliefs, so it doesn’t have to keep bringing them up during your day, or at nighttime when you’re trying to sleep. iRest also helps you cultivate tools that you can use throughout your day to help maintain a more peaceful state of mind, such as the Inner Resource, Body Sensing and Breath Sensing. In addition, iRest teaches you how to stay connected to a state of well-being, so that no matter what comes up in your life, you know how to connect with the part of yourself that is always at peace and at ease.
